The Boxy Tee, Explained: Patterns, Fits, and Factories That Get It Right

A boxy tee has a wide, straight body with a chest width close to its body length, a dropped shoulder, and a shorter hem that hits at or just below the waistband. Getting it right depends on the pattern, not just sizing up. The proportions, sleeve shape, collar, and grading all have to be engineered together, and the fabric needs enough weight to hold the shape. The best boxy tees come from factories with in-house pattern makers and heavyweight jersey.

Here's what defines a boxy fit, and how to work with a factory to make one.

Boxy vs. Oversized vs. Relaxed

  • Boxy: wide and short. The body is nearly square, and the hem sits at or just below the waistband.
  • Oversized: wide and long. Everything is scaled up, including body length.
  • Relaxed: a little extra room through the body, with traditional proportions.

A boxy tee is defined by its ratio of width to length, not by size alone.

The Measurements That Define a Boxy Tee

  • Chest width: generous, measured flat across the chest
  • Body length: shorter than a standard tee, so the width reads as intentional
  • Shoulder drop: the shoulder seam sits down the arm for a squared-off line
  • Sleeve: wider opening and length that hits mid-bicep or lower
  • Hem: straight, not tapered
  • Collar: a rib collar sized to the wider body, lying flat without gaping

For example, our 1551-C Standard Crop Tee in a size medium measures 21" across the chest and 25½" in body length. That near-square proportion is what makes it read as boxy.

Why Fabric Weight Matters

A boxy silhouette needs fabric with body. Lightweight jersey collapses, and the tee just looks too big. Heavyweight jersey, around 6–6.5 oz/yd², holds the square shape and hangs cleanly from a dropped shoulder.

Getting a Custom Boxy Tee Made

1. Start with a reference. Bring a tee whose proportions you love, or a clear sketch with target measurements.

2. Spec the ratios. Define chest width, body length, shoulder drop, and sleeve length for your sample size.

3. Choose your fabric. Weight, construction (tubular or side-seamed), and finish.

4. Account for dyeing. Garment-dyed tees shrink during dyeing, so the pattern has to be built for the finished measurements.

5. Sample and refine. Expect revisions. Small changes to shoulder drop or length can transform a boxy fit.

6. Grade carefully. Proportions need to stay boxy from XS through 3XL, not just in the sample size.

What to Look For in a Boxy-Tee Factory

  • In-house pattern makers experienced with boxy and oversized fits
  • Heavyweight jersey, ideally knit in-house
  • Garment dyeing and shrinkage control
  • Samples and revisions built into development
  • Consistent grading across sizes
